James Reynolds is a partner in the firm’s San Diego office. James has represented clients in a variety of disputed matters for over 35 years. He has significant experience with jury trials, administrative hearings, arbitrations and appeals, and he routinely provides pre-litigation advice and guidance on contract preparation, insurance coverage and risk avoidance.

His extensive and broad litigation/dispute resolution experience includes breach of contract; shareholder disputes; trade secrets, employee confidentially and non-disclosure agreements; and patent and trademark prosecution and defense. James recently represented a Cayman Islands company in a lengthy, complex shareholder lawsuit concerning carbon trading under the Kyoto Protocol with alleged damages exceeding $150 million. Mr. Reynolds successfully defended the monetary claim and obtained over $6 million for his client on a cross-complaint.

James has extensive experience with Errors and Omissions, Comprehensive General Liability and Directors and Officers insurance coverage issues, ensuring clients receive the best representation possible while obtaining the benefit of any potential insurance protection and coverage.

He has represented numerous real estate owners, general contractors, design/engineering professionals and subcontractors in litigated matters including contract disputes, liens and construction defect claims.

James is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a select organization comprising only the most experienced trial attorneys in the United States. He has maintained an AV rating with Martindale Hubble since 1987, is a panel arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, serves as pro tem judge for the San Diego County Superior Court and was selected one of "San Diego's Top Lawyers" by San Diego Magazine in 2015.

James maintains an active Alternative Dispute Resolution practice serving as arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association and the San Diego County Superior Courts. His ADR experience reaches back to the early 1990s when he acted as an arbitrator for the San Diego County Superior Court and was one of the initial members of the Court’s approved mediator list. In 2002 James was appointed to the American Arbitration Association’s commercial dispute arbitration panel. He also has served as judge pro tem for the San Diego County Traffic Court and Small Claims Court programs. For many years James volunteered his services as a San Diego County Bar Association’s Fee Dispute arbitrator, resolving fee disputes between a client and their lawyer. He also was a volunteer attorney for the San Diego County Bar Association’s Immigration Services program and successfully advocated for permanent asylum for several immigrant families.

Prior to joining Shustak Reynolds, James was a partner for many years at San Diego’s premier civil trial law firm -- McInnis Fitzgerald Rees Sharkey & McIntyre and, following the merger of the McInnis firm, he was a partner at Higgs Fletcher & Mack, one of San Diego’s oldest law firms.

He lives in Carmel Valley with his wife Mary of 39 years who is the current president of Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary Board. Rady Children’s Hospital is one of the world’s leaders in genomics aimed at treating and curing childhood diseases. Their two children have graduated college and are braving the new economy.
